What's new

I have been studying a fantastic program of Somatic movement and Movement based expressive art therapy at the Tamalpa Institute in California. It's an immersion program that requires full participation in almost 40 hours a week in school.
The material is mind opening and multi-layered. It has opened up so many avenues for creative expression, dance communication, guided self-therapy and personal growth.
I'm returning to California take the next level. And I'm currently applying it to my teaching and dancing.

Admittedly, it hasn't left much time for other pursuits but I have managed to take a wonderful Moroccan dance class with Hannah Romanowsky  (Ballet Afsaneh, Aiwah!) and I got in a performance of Afghani dance to the amazing live music of Silk Road Caravan.

I am now in Vienna teaching 5 days of seminars for the lovely Wustenrosen. It's a series of 3 coaching sessions for the group, a follow up on the teaching certificate and a public seminar with hafla.
I'm loving the coaching sessions! It's so great to work this way. I get to see what they are doing and help them make it better. In this case, they requested assistance with synchronizing the group dance - both chorus and partner, music interpretation - taking the next step in creativity for Improvisational Tribal Style and then we'll do group cascades. So far, it's been a pleasure and so very satisfying. Great feedback always makes me happy!

Levels: Use all the possibilities that your stage has to offer. Stand, kneel, sit and lie. Change levels easily, gracefully. Travel at each level. Surprise and rivet your audience with dynamic tempo changes, intensity and flowing movements.
Advanced improv techinques: Bring order from chaos. Delight audiences with interplay between dancers. Use music as your dance partner. Mezmerize your viewers with emotion and mysterious narrative.  And,  learn how to make a performance with 30 minutes or less preparation time. Applying techniques from the Tamalpa life art process, we will open our traditional dance form to a larger creative vitality.   ... Good for solo, duo and larger groups. Bring writing materials, water and be prepared to participate physically and creatively.

Special Events

I have a book published or rather re-published. Yes, it's something a little different but fun none the less! Look for Making a Scene about the Hardcore Punk music scene in NYC. And remember, I'm not in the photos, I took the photos.

Teaching for Tempest in MA was great! A wonderful woman and perfect hostess. I was honored to teach a couple of seminars in her home studio and participate in a regonal RI, MA hafla event. Wonderful people and great experience all around.

Tribal Fest 10! Was amazing!! The workshops with Tempest (stylization) and E.Artemis Mourat (zills) were tremendous. Three days of performances from afternoon until night. The best of Tribal Carolina Nariccio, Rachel Brice, John Compton, Zoe Jakes, Elizabeth Strong, Ariella, Colleena... and myself

Travel

Amsterdam was wonderful! Seeing Zafira Dance Company, Jill Parker, The Uzume. Sharing a stage with them and so many other wonderful dancers! Taking seminars from Olivia and Maria. A great experience made even better by the company of Stania Muzikova.

March and April we were in Brno, Krakow, Prague, and Valencia for seminars and performances.
Outside of Carcassone, in the south of France we met up with members of Ballet Afsaneh for a little rest and a small performance in an artist retreat.

Istanbul in June, was wonderful! I found new textile pieces and hair ornaments. I happened on some fabulous large pendants that aren't being exported from Afghanistan any more.
Selim Sesler at Araf was a great show.

I was in San Francisco in August visiting my family and taking classes. I was there in time for the phenominal SF Mecca Immersion. 5 days of intensive seminars with some of the best teachers and dancers - Carolina Nericcio, Zoe Jakes, Mardi Love, Rose Hardin, Cera Byer. Plus Elizabeth Strong, Mira Betz, Damage Control,... and music groups Beats Antique, Brass Menazeri and Dan Cantrell in phenominal shows all over the City!!
